The Refugio
Base camp for the next steps on the journey of a lifetime
Transformation requires bandwidth. If your mind is occupied by the pain of a poorly loaded frame, you cannot hear what the trail is trying to tell you. We provide the practical preparation required to neutralize the physical obstacles, leaving you free to experience the profound.
Functional Fluency
Developing a body that speaks the language of the trail. We focus on the practical habits of load-bearing, footfall, and posture that preserve your energy for the horizon.
The Clinical Eye
Expertise shouldn't be loud; it should be precise. We provide the assessment and adjustments that neutralize small physical frictions before they become obstacles to your progress.
The Shared Path
Preparation is the ultimate insurance policy. Our structured cohorts provide a step-by-step lead-up to your journey, ensuring you arrive at the start line ready to excel, not just survive.
Training Foundation
The Daily Dozen was the first routine designed for this project in 1999. It was developed while studying under Randy Huntington, one of the world's top track and field coaches. We began teaching classes and running programs in 2002, which led to the program featured in Fit by Nature, published in 2011.
We provide a simple, effective, and fun way for people from all walks of life to get in great shape while enjoying being outside. The principles we established in 1999 remain the baseline for the work we do at Base Camp today.
The Saturday morning training, which started in 2003 in Seattle, Washington, USA, still meets at 9:00 AM every Saturday beside the Old Chapel in Discovery Park. It’s stood the test of time and if you’re visiting Seattle and would ever like to attend - just drop us a line and we will give you the details.
This simple video was recorded 20 years ago for the Fit by Nature book. Despite its age, it remains the definitive record of the philosophy we maintain today!
Weeks 1 - 3
The structural movement audit and adaptation protocol
Movement is a language. In this briefing, we demonstrate the core mechanics of the Refugio standard—from the efficiency of the "Soft Footfall" to the clinical precision of load-bearing. This is the difference between surviving the trail and excelling on it.
Weeks 4 - 6
Building the Engine
The focus shifts to functional strength and endurance. We introduce the specific conditioning required for consecutive high-mileage days, ensuring your cardiovascular and muscular systems are in sync.
Weeks 7 - 9
Load and Literacy
We introduce the gear and the terrain. You’ll learn the "Practical Sovereignty" of pack management and footfall, testing your mechanics under the weight you’ll carry on the trail.
Weeks 10 - 12
Taper and Transition
The final phase is about recovery and mental readiness. We fine-tune your recovery protocols and finalize the logistical briefing, ensuring you arrive at the start line with total certainty.
The Commitment to Success
We aim for absolute certainty and safety. We want you to be certain that you will get the maximum results from your training efforts, and confident that you are physically prepared before you ever set foot on the trail.
Our success is measured by your results. This is why every journey begins with a Practical Readiness Assessment. This allows us to understand your strengths, the areas for improvement, and the specific opportunities you have to make significant gains as we design your training protocol.
This is a practical conversation to ensure your goals, your physical state, and our protocol are in complete alignment. We work with those who are serious about their results and ready to commit the time necessary to succeed. If you are ready to move beyond guesswork and build a foundation that is second to none, the first step is here.
The Guides
We are a team collectively committed to delivering a world-class training experience—the same level of precision and support a professional athlete or a budding Olympian would expect to receive.
Our team has the experience of training people from all walks of life: from elite athletes and military operators to business leaders, educators, public servants, grandparents, and the occasional dog that wants to tag along. We love what we do. We are here to provide the quiet leadership, constant expertise, and the support required to ensure that your outcome is exactly what you envisioned—or even a little better.
